Statement May 2008

A new location and art environment prompted a search for my own space in more ways than one.
My creative spaces are now a terrace, a studio space in Poole, sketching at the beach and wherever else I can.
I intend to pursue my own course pathway; defining a direction and endeavouring to confront my position in relation to contemporary art.

In my work, I remain individual, constantly open to innovation and interested in current events and contemporary life. Through figurative work, I question issues such as poverty, the homeless, population migration, and the attendant conflict, problems, hopes and pleasures challenging their immediate lives.

With the advent of exploding creativity in all the new mediums of today, the blurring of disciplinary boundaries has made researching mixed mediums, digital and computer manipulated images a necessity.

The resulting ideas generated through exploring a variety of different mediums, actively engaging in learning and enquiry will bring to realisation an individual body of work, presented eventually through paintings and new pieces.

I have decided to begin with two specific factors in the process of making this project work, they are 'the beach and its public.' As time and work evolves I may extend the boundaries of the location and the subject matter, but for now I'm working to the title 'Crossing the Beach.'
